What Is Psychic Amnesia… and Why Does It Happen in a Reading?

Have you ever been in a moment where something should make perfect sense…
and yet your mind goes completely blank?

In mediumship, there’s actually a name for this: psychic amnesia.

It’s a term often used by renowned medium John Edward to describe what happens when a sitter temporarily forgets information that should be familiar to them during a reading.

And yes—it’s very real.

I’ve experienced it myself. Here is what happened…

Edward and Maybelle St. John,
my grandparents

Before I ever became a professional medium, I had a reading with George Anderson. During the session, I was told that “Edward” was coming through.

I searched my mind… and came up with nothing.

Edward? I didn’t know an Edward.

The medium told me gently, “That’s okay—just give it time.”

About six hours later, it came to me suddenly—
Edward was my grandfather.

I had simply never called him that. He was always “Grandpa” to me.
In that moment, my mind couldn’t make the connection.

This is exactly how psychic amnesia works.

When you are in a reading, you are processing emotion, memory, validation, and surprise all at once. Your mind is trying to keep up with something that feels both deeply personal and slightly outside of your normal awareness.

It’s a lot.

Because of that, it’s actually very common for people to temporarily forget:

  • Names

  • Important memories

  • Past experiences

  • Even significant life events

Not because they don’t remember them—but because they are overwhelmed in the moment.

There is also another layer to this.

Many people go into a reading expecting a specific loved one to come through. When someone unexpected steps forward, the brain hesitates. It searches for recognition in a place it wasn’t prepared to look.

And that pause… is where psychic amnesia lives.

The important thing to remember is this:

You are not doing anything wrong.

You are not “failing” the reading.

You are simply human.

And from the perspective of Spirit, there is no frustration or judgment.
There is only patience, understanding, and love.

In fact, they often know that the recognition will come later—and it usually does.

Sometimes minutes later.
Sometimes hours later.
Sometimes even days later.

But when it clicks… it clicks. And then the message makes perfect sense. 💗
Because Heaven is closer than you think.
